Homeboy Industries is located in Los Angeles, CA, and is a place that “provides hope, training, and support to formerly gang-involved and previously incarcerated men and women allowing them to redirect their lives and become contributing members of our community.” Homeboy Industries was started by Father Greg Boyle, who graduated from Gonzaga University and is a Jesuit. For those who are involved at Homeboy Industries, it provides many helpful services such as tattoo removal, workforce development, educational services, legal service, mental health services, substance abuse support, and more.
In providing services and hundreds of jobs, in areas such as serving and baking, to former gang members, Homeboy Industries gives these men and women the skills and tools that they need to start a new life. They are able to gain experience, attain an income, and focus on their well-being, all while being surrounded by people who are in a similar boat and also by people who want to help and see them succeed.
I was able to visit Homeboy Industries during my senior year of high school and hear some of the success stories of this place. I find the community of this place to be truly remarkable. The most impactful thing about this to me, is that a business like Homeboy Industries can exist and succeed on a principal of helping rather than on profit, like many other businesses today.
